Up On Fecal Creek

Forgive your faithful 'Dlogger if this is old hat, but shouldn't the phrase be "Down the creek without a paddle?" If one is up the creek, can't one just relax and let the current do the work? Of course it depends on where one wants to go, but if the oft-used adjective is applied to the creek, presumably one just wants to get back to where he got in.
